A Gathering of Shadows - V.E. Schwab

OMG!! I love, Love, LOVE this Book/Series/the whole shabang (yes, I'm aware the word sucks but it applies) The World is...and the characters are so...and the writing is just... and the feels, OMFG the crazy FEELS!!

Okay, first thing's first, in case you didn't know- this is an AWESOME nay PHENOMENAL YA Fantasy with minimal Romance (though just enough to make you root for unions and swoon a bit), magnificent world building (minus the overdone flowery/verbose/loquacious etal prose unlike moi) and rapid-fire pacing coupled with TONS of action!

The writing is strong/striking/moving and all the amazing descriptives you're looking for in a fun filled day of reading. Suuuure, this tome was ravenously devoured in one sitting but now, having finished it, I wish I had savoured it a bit more or turned the dial WAY down on the reading speed. Oh well, there's always book #3. Back to the writing style. The writing is so detailed that you feel like you've been transported and placed front and center of all the action as you experience every twist and turn alongside the elaborate characters and their dexterous personas (and when I say dexterous I mean that in every sense of the word).

The world building is perfect, and i use that word sparingly. There are multiple Londons (Grey, Red, White and the used up husk known as Black) each with varying degrees of Magical aptitude.

In Red London where the bulk of the story takes place there is/are:

-Royal/ political intrigue featuring a humanly flawed King you like most of the time, a Magic greedy King you dislike, and a dastardly King (and that's being rude to dastards) you wish to smite...HARD!!

-Pirates abound including roguish pirates, burly pirates and cross dressing pirates. One pirate in particular is a woman pretending to be a man at times pretending to be a woman, pretending to be a contestant, at all times being a kick @$$ thief who just doesn't give a Royal $h!t (except for a Royal who can act like a little $h!t so there's that) exciting right??

-Various types of elemental magicians (Earth, Air, Water, Fire, Bone) and even Antari (Magicians who can use all of the elements as well as travel between the different Londons)

-lands that are home to giant like people

-and even a masterly tourney called the Essen Tasch that incorporates each type of character listed above and pulls together the essential (and super awesome secondary) characters to create a unique, evocative, comprehensive, elaborate tale featuring wild characters wrapped up in one hell of an intoxicatingly heady package of YESSSSSS, THANK YOU!

I can't say enough how much I LOVE this Author, this series, this book, these worlds, the FEELY twists (backstabbing and all), the mesmerising writing and most of all the cast (minus a couple that I love to loathe).
