Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.

I'm just trying to light up the world as much as I can one SciFi/paranormal/fantasy/space opera/time travel book at a time.

Secret Santa gem

An Ember in the Ashes - Sabaa Tahir

"Life is made of so many moments that mean nothing. Then one day, a single moment comes along to define every second that comes after."

HOLY CANNOLI guys!!! I got this book from my Secret Santa way back when the season was right for swapping gifts of awesomeness. I forgot though, as mushy brains often do, how utterly psyched I was to get my hands on this book. You know how it is...each month something new and tantalizing debuts and I am like a cat with the new shiny books... needless to say, this gem slipped through the cracks and I am SOOO very happy that I found it again...and then devoured it in a day. The synopsis might not sound 100% alluring but let me assure you right now that there is SO much more under the hood!! There is action aplenty, grueling/heartbreakingly inhumane Trials of Strength and Courage and Loyalty, injustice abound, relatable/gripping characters that I would LOVE to have as my friends doing friendy things with, a few forbidden loves (though no hanky panky...saying that makes me feel old...like it's one step from me screaming at neighborhood kids to get off my lawn...sorry, I digress (often)) there are SERIOUSLY kick @$$ girls inside and the world building is pretty amazing! It is told in the dueling POVs of Elias and Laia. This narration choice is often hit or miss for me. A lot of times dueling POVs just make a garbled mess where you find yourself flipping backwards trying to identify the voice and decode what exactly is going on... none of that here!! Oh, and there are a few mystical magical beings like Jinn and Efrits that don't play a major role...yet?? The twists and turns are a bit easy to foretell but nice pivot points nonetheless. Things are wrapped up at the end but not happily ever after. In fact, as the book closes we see almost every character is in the midst of a crisis...of the heart, of the soul, of mastering one's cookoo-loco murderous brain and it's Insatiable lust, and generally looking for a way to escape one's current predicament. There were hints of fairy godmother plot magic where problems/nasty situations just happened to find their way clear with little to no work but thankfully I didn't get a whiff of this too often. All in all I am DYING to get my hands on A Torch Against the Night!!
