Whenever you read a good book, somewhere in the world a door opens to allow in more light.
I'm just trying to light up the world as much as I can one SciFi/paranormal/fantasy/space opera/time travel book at a time.
This coming of age -high fantasy story was a very happy surprise and highly addictive. It was a winning amalgamation: a little splash of His Dark Materials here (with unique animal demons, and varying abilities for wielding such demons) mixed in with a hint of Harry Potter there (Magic school teaching various magical classes like Demonology, spell casting and scrying to name a few). There are Elfs, Orcs, Dwarfs, Magic wielding human adepts and (relatively speaking) good plain old run of the mill plebs. The world building was excellent coupled with a beautifully elegant/ richly complex host of loveable and down right detestable characters. The book went so fast I couldn't believe my eyes when I looked down at the status bar and saw that my husband and I were at the 94% mark in no time at all. The book does end somewhat abruptly with an obvious cliffhanger (very annoying!) but the story was so strong that it made up for the crummy conclusion (disappointing that it was sans epilogue). The hubby and I are anxiously awaiting any word on book #2 and will be pre-ordering the next in the series as soon as possible. All in all The Novice: Summoner was a fantastically tasty, mysteriously time absorptive read! Well worth it! Enjoy
